This guide provides detailed instructions for installing Thomas & Betts FLOOD-SEAL 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits, ensuring a secure and sealed electrical connection for various conductor sizes.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wrench or socket, Butane torch, Propane torch, 500°F electric heat gun
Supplies needed:
FLOOD-SEAL 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kit (includes heat shrink sleeve and lug), Electrical cable (conductor), Joint compound (if required)
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Conductor
WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Ensure power is disconnected. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules. Remove the cable insulation to the required length and thoroughly wire brush the conductor to ensure a clean connection surface.
- Position Heat Shrink Sleeve
Slip the heat shrink sleeve over the cable end, ensuring it is positioned far enough back to allow for the lug crimping process without interference.
- Crimp and Secure Lug
Crimp the lug securely onto the conductor end. If using joint compound, wipe away any excess. Bolt the lug firmly to the contact pad on the FLOOD-SEAL connector bus.
- Position Sleeve Over Lug
Slide the heat shrink sleeve forward over the lug until it butts against the connector bus, covering the connection point.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Apply heat evenly to the sleeve at the bus end using a butane torch, propane torch, or a 500°F electric heat gun. Do not use Acetylene. Continue heating until a bead of mastic appears at the sleeve end, indicating a complete seal.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Terminal Lug
Working away from the connector bus, continue to apply heat evenly to shrink the sleeve over the terminal lug. Move the heat source to a new position as visual shrinkage occurs.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Cable End
Apply heat evenly to shrink the sleeve over the cable end. A seal is complete when a bead of mastic appears at this end. Ensure even heat application and move the heat source as shrinkage occurs.
