This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Thomas & Betts "FLOOD-SEAL"® 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits, ensuring a proper and sealed connection. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules to prevent danger of electric shock.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wrench or socket set, Butane torch, Propane torch, 500°F electric heat gun
Supplies needed:
Electrical cable, Heat shrink sleeve (from kit), Connector lug (from kit), Joint compound
- Prepare Cable Conductor
Remove the appropriate length of cable insulation from the end of the electrical cable. Thoroughly wire brush the exposed conductor to ensure a clean and optimal contact surface.
- Position Heat Shrink Sleeve
Slip the heat shrink sleeve, provided in the kit, over the prepared cable end. Ensure it is positioned far enough back on the cable to allow for crimping the lug without obstruction.
- Crimp and Bolt Lug
Crimp the connector lug securely onto the prepared conductor end. Immediately wipe away any excess joint compound that may have squeezed out. Then, bolt the crimped lug firmly to the contact pad on the FLOOD-SEAL connector bus.
- Position Sleeve Over Lug
Slide the heat shrink sleeve forward over the crimped lug until it butts firmly against the connector bus. Ensure there are no gaps between the sleeve and the bus.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Using a recommended heat source (butane torch, propane torch, or 500°F electric heat gun – do not use acetylene), apply heat evenly to the sleeve at the bus end. Continue shrinking until a bead of mastic appears at the sleeve end, indicating a complete and watertight seal.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Terminal Lug
Working away from the connector bus, continue to apply heat evenly to shrink the sleeve tightly over the terminal lug. Move the heat source to new positions as visual shrinkage occurs to ensure uniform application.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Cable End
Finally, apply heat evenly to shrink the remainder of the sleeve over the cable insulation. A complete seal is achieved when a bead of mastic appears at the cable end of the sleeve.
