How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 756LR and 776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible cable connections to high voltage apparatus on 35kV class systems.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable cleaning supplies, Beveling tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
756/776LR Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Crimp connector, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Grounding wire (No. 14 AWG Copper or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Silicone lubricant, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), Mating product/apparatus bushing
- De-energize and Prepare Cable
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation to prevent serious injury. Position the cable in its final assembled location with sufficient slack. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm).
- Prepare Cable End and Install Adapter
Carefully bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean the cable insulation, then lubricate it, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug
Remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before insertion. Fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (should be less than 7 inches/178mm) before crimping. Crimp the lug according to its specific instructions, then wipe away any excess inhibitor.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter, pushing until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. For the opposite end, clean and lubricate the mating part, insert it into the elbow, engage threads, hand tighten, and then torque according to the mating part's instructions.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper (or equivalent) wire through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded, either via a grounding device or an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.
- Perform Voltage Test
If using the integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection has been made, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
