How to Install the 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Cutting tool, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), Silicone grease, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Measures

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Check the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read all installation instructions thoroughly and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Remove Livefront Terminator

Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable, proceed to the next step. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end of the cable, ensuring the cut is square and the conductor is not nicked.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean and avoid introducing excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the instructions and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  7. Prepare for Final Elbow Connection

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate the elbow by hand; use a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool for any subsequent operations.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (168RLR ONLY)

For 168RLR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false reading. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
