Overview

The ABB 756LR-J0230 is a 35kV, 600A deadbreak elbow connector with an integrated test point, designed for reliable medium-voltage cable connections in underground residential, commercial, and industrial distribution systems. This fully shielded, submersible elbow features a molded rubber housing with 100% peroxide-cured EPDM insulation and conductive materials for long-term durability in harsh environments. The deadbreak design allows safe connection and disconnection under load without service interruption, while the built-in test point enables voltage verification without disconnecting the elbow—critical for maintenance efficiency and system reliability. Key specifications include a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 21.1kV, phase-to-phase voltage of 36.6kV, and a basic impulse level (BIL) of 150kV. The unit supports continuous current ratings of 600A and momentary ratings of 25kA for 10 cycles. It accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.980 to 1.180 inches and conductor sizes from #1/0 AWG to 1/0 kcmil (compacted stranded or solid), with an aluminum compression lug for secure terminations. The 756LR-J0230 is engineered for compatibility with ABB’s 600 Series accessories, including pad-mounted switchgear, transformers, and underground cable terminations where space constraints and safety are critical. The kit includes a pre-installed insulated plug, cap, stud, cable adapter, and lubricant tube, reducing field assembly time and minimizing installation errors. For metallic tape shield or drain wire cables, an ECS cable seal grounding device is recommended. This product meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 for deadbreak connectors, ensuring reliable performance in utility and substation environments.

How to Install 756LR/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 756LR/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems, including cable preparation, connector assembly, and grounding. Always ensure apparatus is de-energized.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cutting tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

756LR/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Crimp connector, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Cable (appropriate for 35kV class systems), Grounding device (e.g., 20MA, 21MA, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, or alternate method), 10TL cable shield adapter (if using UNISHIELD* or LEAD SHEATH cable), Wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper ampacity) for grounding, Suitable connector for grounding wire, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), Silicone lubricant

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation or removal of parts. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Failure to de-energize will result in serious or fatal injury.

  2. Prepare Cable Position

Position the cable so it is located in its final assembled position, ensuring enough slack to provide adequate clearance for removing the elbows. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.

  3. Clean Cable Jacket

Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm).

  4. Perform Cable Preparation

Follow the specific cable preparation instructions for your cable type. If using a 20MA, 21MA grounding device, or 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, refer to their instructions. For UNISHIELD* or LEAD SHEATH cable, use a 10TL cable shield adapter and its instructions. For jacketed and non-jacketed cables, remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to the provided dimensions and diagrams.

  5. Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  6. Prepare Conductor

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The length of exposed conductor must be between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.

  7. Crimp Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the “Check Dimension” before crimping (must be less than 7 inches/178mm). Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping must be between 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.

  8. Install Elbow

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Make sure the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; if not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  9. Connect to Mating Product (First End)

DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it is not equipped with a stud. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part, lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  10. Connect to Mating Product (Opposite End)

Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that mating part.

  11. Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until the cap snaps into place. This plug provides a means for detecting system voltage.

  12. Ground Cable Shield

Insert one end of a wire with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device or through an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.

  13. Perform Voltage Test (Post-Installation)

If the connector is equipped with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Test with a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
