How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 756LR and 776LR deadbreak elbow connectors on 35kV class systems, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Cable stripping tools, Measuring tape or ruler
Supplies needed:
756LR or 776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Cable (appropriate for 35kV class systems), Grounding device (if not using alternate method), Wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper for grounding), Suitable connector (for grounding wire), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), Silicone lubricant
- Position and Cut Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Jacket
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) from the cut end.
- Prepare Cable for Connection
Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to its specific type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed shield wires) as detailed in the product instructions. Ensure cable insulation, semi-con shield, and outer jacket are cut to the specified lengths (e.g., 10-3/8”, 11-3/8”, 13-5/8” from the end). Refer to specific instructions for UNISHIELD, Lead Sheath, or grounding devices if used.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor Length
Carefully remove any protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter without nicking the adapter or conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). If the length is incorrect, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it must be less than 7 inches (178mm). Crimp the lug according to its instructions. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the lug end to the cable adapter is 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm) after crimping.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Apparatus
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite End of Elbow (if applicable)
If connecting to another mating part on the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate that mating part. Insert it into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug (if used)
If using an insulating plug as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place. CAUTION: This plug provides a means for detecting system voltage; follow voltage test directions.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, avoiding damage to the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded either via a grounding device (following its instructions) or an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Safety Check)
CAUTION: Ensure all 600amp L-Kit components are torqued to specifications. To test for voltage, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points, following its manufacturer's directions. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it.
