How to Install T&B Liquidtight Connectors
This guide provides the proper method for installing T&B liquidtight connectors with liquidtight flexible metallic conduit. IMPORTANT: Disconnect power before installation. Product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw (32 Tooth/ln. no. set), Power band saw (optional, 24-32 Tooth/ln. wavy set), Metal jig (optional, for conduit cutting), Smooth jaw wrench (for PVC coated connectors), Torque wrench (for tightening to specified values)
Supplies needed:
Liquidtight flexible metallic conduit, T&B liquidtight connector (5000, 7000, 9000, or 3300 series), T&B 140 series locknuts (for knockout applications, purchase separately), T&B 5260 series sealing gaskets (for knockout applications, purchase separately), PVC cement (if needed for PVC coated connectors), Hand protection, Eye protection
- Prepare the Flexible Conduit
Cut the flexible conduit with a clean, square end. Use a metal jig (if available from conduit manufacturers) or a sharp hacksaw with a 32 Tooth/ln. no. set. For high production, a power band saw with a 24-32 Tooth/ln. wavy set, operating at no more than 400 feet per minute, can be used. Do not use an abrasive wheel.
- Assemble Connector Components
For 5000, 7000, 9000 series, and PVC coated 3300 series connectors, first slide the gland nut onto the conduit. Next, slide on the nylon sealing ring. Finally, thread in the Safe Edge™ Cone. Ensure all components are oriented correctly as shown in Figure 2 of the documentation.
- Install Connector into Knockout
Insert the connector body into the knockout box. For knockout applications, use T&B 140 series locknuts and 5260 series sealing gaskets (purchased separately). Ensure the 'O' ring (if applicable, e.g., 5365 to 5370 series) is correctly positioned on the outside of the box. For Chase® connector assemblies, ensure only the Chase® Nipple goes inside the knockout.
- Tighten the Connector
Secure the conduit by tightening the gland nut to the connector body. Refer to the provided torque table for specific tightening torque values (e.g., 3/8" requires 200 lb.-in., 1/2" requires 300 lb.-in.). For PVC coated connectors, use a smooth jaw wrench to tighten; if gouging occurs exposing metal, apply PVC cement. For Chase® connector assemblies, achieve lock-up by tightening the Chase® Nipple to the body or by turning the body onto the Chase® Nipple.
