How to Install T&B Liquidtight Connectors (5000 Series)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of T&B liquidtight connectors, ensuring high performance and reliability for flexible metallic conduit applications.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw (32 Tooth/ln. no. set) or power band saw (24-32 Tooth/ln. wavy set), Metal jig (optional, for cutting conduit), Smooth jaw wrench, Torque wrench, Hand protection, Eye protection
Supplies needed:
Liquidtight flexible metal conduit, T&B Liquidtight connector (e.g., 5359 series), T&B 140 series locknuts (for knockout applications, purchase separately), T&B 5260 series sealing gaskets (for knockout applications, purchase separately), PVC cement (optional, for PVC coated connectors)
- Ensure Safety Precautions
WARNING: Disconnect all power before beginning installation to prevent risk of electrical shock. CAUTION: This product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Wear hand protection and eye protection throughout the installation process.
- Prepare the Flexible Conduit
Cut the liquidtight flexible metal conduit with a clean, square end. Use a metal jig, a sharp hacksaw with a 32 Tooth/ln. no. set, or a power band saw with a 24-32 Tooth/ln. wavy set (not more than 400’/minute). Do not use an abrasive wheel.
- Assemble Connector Components onto Conduit
For 5000, 7000, and 9000 series connectors, first slide the gland nut onto the cut end of the conduit. Next, slide the nylon sealing ring onto the conduit. Finally, thread the Safe Edge™ Cone onto the conduit. For PVC coated connectors, use a smooth jaw wrench for tightening; if gouging occurs exposing metal, PVC cement is recommended.
- Secure Conduit to Connector Body
Insert the prepared conduit end (with gland nut, sealing ring, and Safe Edge™ Cone) into the connector body. Tighten the gland nut to the connector body. Refer to the torque table for the correct tightening torque based on the fitting's trade size (e.g., 3/8" = 200 lb.-in., 1/2" = 300 lb.-in., 3/4" = 500 lb.-in., 1" = 700 lb.-in., 1 1/4" = 1000 lb.-in., 1 1/2" = 1200 lb.-in., 2"-4" = 1600 lb.-in.).
- Mount Connector to Knockout Box
Insert the connector body through the knockout hole in the box wall. Secure the connector by threading the locknut onto the connector body from the inside of the box. For knockout applications, T&B 140 series locknuts and 5260 series sealing gaskets are recommended (purchase separately). Ensure the 'O' ring (if present, e.g., 5371 series) is correctly positioned on the outside of the box.
