How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial connection of Elastimold 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors to UD cable and 35kV class bushings. For 376LR models, ensure the test point cap is lubricated and assembled tightly.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Cable cut-back template, Hotstick, Wire strippers, Pliers, Appropriate grounding connector tool

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 375LR or 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector kit, Lubricant (supplied with kit, do not substitute), UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if shipping covers are present), Silicone grease (for 376LR test point cap)

  1. De-energize and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation to prevent serious or fatal injury. Inspect all components of the elbow connector kit for completeness, damage, and compatibility with the cable and mating bushing. Verify the probe threads freely into the compression lug for approximately four turns without resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered.

  2. Train and Prepare Cable

Train the UD cable to ease future operation, ensuring at least 20 inches of excess cable beyond the end of the bushing pad mount transformer. Squarely cut the excess cable at the bushing's center line. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Using a cable cut-back template, remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all conductive residue.

  3. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately before installation. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  4. Assemble Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for future elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing (De-energized)

DANGER: Ensure the transformer and mating bushing are known to be de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. With firm footing and positive control, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
