How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Cable cutting tool, Cable insulation removal tool, Screwdriver, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with product), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Appropriate Ground Connector, HV Insulated Cap(s) or Connector(s)
- Pre-Installation Checks and Safety
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; if resistance is met, check for damage. If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.
- Remove Livefront Termination
Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to a length of 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Verify the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches; if it is greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring the cut is square and the conductor is not nicked.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately after preparation. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean and avoid introducing excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral and Hose Clamp
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the hose clamp as shown in the product diagram and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Prepare for Connection to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Once lubricated, the elbow is ready for connection to the bushing plug using a hotstick as per the operating instructions. Do not attempt to operate by hand. DANGER: Loadbreak connectors must be operated with a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool. Consult company safe work practices for the required live-line tool length.
