How to Install 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 261LR (without test point) and 262LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors. These connectors are designed to terminate various UD cables and connect to 25kV class 200ampere loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick (for operation)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type), Conductive copper tape (if applicable for cable type), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kits)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Procedures
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read the entire installation instructions thoroughly before beginning and have all required tools ready, maintaining cleanliness.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for future operation. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield according to your specific cable type (concentric neutral, drain wires, or copper tape shield) and the dimensions specified in the documentation (e.g., 9-5/8” (240mm) for jacket removal, 7-1/8” (180mm) for copper tape shield removal). Prepare neutral or drain wires as instructed for grounding. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as per the cable cut back template, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow the instructions provided with that kit.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
WARNING: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with the connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Only lubricate if known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Maintain positive control and use a fast, firm, straight motion to fully engage the elbow with the bushing, ensuring the internal lock engages.
