How to Install the 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to a 35kV class loadbreak bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Hotstick (minimum 8 ft)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components

Ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Check package contents for completeness and damage. Inspect all components for proper fit with cable and mating products. Verify probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness. If supplied with shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the cable as shown (20” min. beyond end of cable pad mount transformer) for ease of operation. Cut excess cable squarely at the bushing's center line. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2” back from the cable end. Remove shield and insulation squarely, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug per the crimp chart, starting at the mark and rotating 180 degrees for each crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end 1/8” max. Thoroughly clean insulation to remove conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant only; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the neutral wires for elbow operation.

  5. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Ensure the transformer and elbow are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand (if applicable) with a fast, straight, firm motion, avoiding placement near a ground plane. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock. Do not operate by hand.
