How to Install the 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of the 273RLR and 274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for grounding)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks
Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; if encountered, replace damaged components. Read all instructions and gather required tools, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- De-energize Apparatus and Remove Livefront Terminator
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Remove the rubber cap from the terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train cables to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed; if greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Keep insulation clean and avoid introducing excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole.
- Thread and Tighten Probe
Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the hose clamp as shown and tighten snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Lubricate and Connect Elbow to Bushing
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact until slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface.
