What are the available voltage classes?
The Elastimold PCJ power cable joints are available in 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV classes.
What standards do the PCJ joints meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and the connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings. Electrical ratings meet IEEE 404.
What is the pull force withstand capability?
The pin-and-socket interlock design of the PCJ power cable joints can withstand a pull force up to 500 lb.
Do I need to tape the cable entrance?
No, the cable entrance engages the insulation shielding of the cable, eliminating the need for taping.
How do I select connectors for different conductors?
Aluminum compression connectors are for aluminum-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-copper. Copper compression connectors are for copper-to-copper only and should not be used on aluminum.
How are transition joints catalog numbers constructed?
When constructing a catalog number for a transition joint (two different-size cables), list the larger connector first and the smaller connector second.
What is the short-time current rating?
The short-time current rating is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
What is the housing material?
The joints feature permanently crimped connectors inside ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber housings.
What is the continuous current rating?
The continuous current rating of the PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What is the maximum conductor size?
The Elastimold PCJ power cable joints can accommodate conductor sizes up to 1250 kcmil.
How to Install the 35PCJ1 Series Cable Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the 15/25/35PCJ1 series straight joint for wire shielded cables.
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Measuring tape, Wire-brush, Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Conductor connector (user supplied), DELTECt Cable ties TYD5135 (for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent (if needed), Appropriate connector (for grounding wires), Cable jacket reconstruction material (if applicable)
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Cables
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus during installation or removal of parts. Confirm all components are compatible and undamaged. Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint centerline. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Cut both cables at the joint centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Joint Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1 insulation from at least 1/2 inch to no greater than 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires for temporary storage.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the specified dimensions (e.g., 2 1/2 inches for 500-750 MCM conductor 'X'). Then, carefully remove the insulation shield from both cables according to the specified dimensions (e.g., 6 1/4 inches for 500-750 MCM conductor 'Y'). WARNING: DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR during this process.
- Install and Crimp the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Verify the conductor insertion dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; redo assembly if it exceeds the maximum. Crimp the splice following the manufacturer's recommendations provided with the splice. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Verify the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; redo assembly if it exceeds the maximum. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping. Ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area. Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate in the direction of the arrows to create a lubricant ramp at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135) on each end of the cable entrance, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the splice edge and 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first tie with offset locking heads. Use a T&B WT3D tool to tighten and trim. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
