How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor, wire shielded cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Cable stripping tool, Utility knife, Deburring tool, Measuring tape
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Appropriate electrical connector, #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent, Jacket sealing kit (if applicable), Jacket restoration kit (if applicable), HV insulated caps or connectors (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare Cables for Jointing
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint's centerline to ensure sufficient shield wire length. Remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 34 inches (865mm) and Cable 2 to 20 inches (510mm). Fold back the shield wires on both cables. Cut both cables precisely at the joint's centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Joint Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation from 1/2 inch (13mm) to 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and then lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Using the provided stripping guide, carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2. WARNING: Do not cut or nick the cable insulation or conductor, as this could lead to assembly failure.
- Install the Splice
If using aluminum conductors, wirebrush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Crimp the splice following the recommendations provided with the splice kit. Wipe off any excess inhibitor (if applicable) from the splice. Verify that the distance between the cable insulations does not exceed 5-1/4 inches (133mm); if it does, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs created during crimping from the splice and the surrounding joint assembly area. Clean the cables where indicated and then lubricate them in the direction of the arrows to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Complete Joint Assembly
Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. Reshape the shield wires and securely attach them to the ends of the joint. Insert one of the shield wires from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat this for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent for grounding. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. If applicable, reconstruct the cable jacket over both cables and the joint housing.
- Seal or Restore Cable Jacket (If Applicable)
WARNING: If one or both of the cables being joined are jacketed, it is crucial to seal the ends of the jacket or completely restore the jacket across the joint. Follow standard operating procedures or instructions provided with compatible jacket sealing or restoration kits to ensure appropriate jacket seals or restoration.
