What voltage classes are available for PCJ joints?
Elastimold PCJ power cable joints are available in 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV classes.
What is the short-time current rating of PCJ joints?
The short-time current rating is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
How are transition joint catalog numbers constructed?
For transition joints, the larger connector is listed first in the catalog number, followed by the smaller connector.
Can copper connectors be used with aluminum conductors?
No, copper compression connectors are for copper-to-copper connections only and should not be used on aluminum conductors.
What standards do PCJ joint components meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and the connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
Do PCJ joints require taping during installation?
No, the cable entrance engages the insulation shielding of the cable, eliminating the need for taping.
What is the maximum pull force the interlock can withstand?
The pin-and-socket interlock of the PCJ power cable joint is designed to withstand a pull force up to 500 lb.
What is the BIL impulse withstand for a 35 kV PCJ joint?
For a 35 kV class PCJ joint, the BIL impulse withstand (1.2 x 50 μsec. wave) is 300 kV.
What is the continuous current rating of PCJ joints?
The continuous current rating of PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What environments are suitable for PCJ power cable joints?
These joints are permanent, fully shielded, and fully submersible, suitable for direct-burial, underground vault, and overhead applications.
How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Series Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 15/25/35PCJ1 series straight joint for wire shielded cables, ensuring a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible connection.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wire-brush, Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only), Measuring tape or ruler, Cable stripping tools
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing (included), Splice (Conductor Contact, included), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, included), Electrical connector (user supplied), DELTECt Cable ties TYD5135 (for 35kV ONLY), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent, Cleaning supplies, Cable jacket reconstruction material (where applicable)
- De-energize and Inspect
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Read these instructions entirely before proceeding.
- Prepare Cable Ends
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint centerline to ensure sufficient shield wire length. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Cut both cables precisely at the joint centerline.
- Taper Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Carefully slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires for temporary storage.
- Prepare for Splice
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the 'X' and 'Y' dimensions provided in the document for your conductor size. Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or conductor.
- Install Conductor Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Verify the dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping and ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area.
- Final Joint Assembly
Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate them in the direction of the arrows to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield. Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV installations ONLY, install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance as specified, and remove the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye.
- Grounding and Jacket Reconstruction
Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the diagram. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
