How to Install Elastimold 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 273RLR (without Test Point) and 274RLR (with Test Point) loadbreak replacement elbow connectors, converting a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick (full insulated live-line tool), Suitable sensing device (for 274RLR voltage test), Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate ground connector
- Perform Initial Checks and Safety Precautions
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Read all instructions before starting. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness. Check package contents for completeness and damage. Check all components for proper fit with cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered.
- Remove Livefront Terminator
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized. Remove the rubber cap from the terminator. Cut off the existing connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train cables to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed. If greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove cable insulation 1-3/8 inches from the end of the cable, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart supplied with the compression lug for recommended crimp information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep insulation clean. Do not use excess grease or introduce grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown and tighten snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug (Loadmake Operation)
DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Use a full insulated hotstick. After establishing firm footing and positive control, place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages.
- Perform Voltage Test (274RLR ONLY)
For 274RLR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
