How to Install 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

This guide details the installation of 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables. It covers cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to 25kV class loadbreak bushings.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant, Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease (for 274RLR test point cap)

  1. Review Safety Warnings and Prepare Components

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Check package contents for completeness. Verify proper fit of components with cable and/or mating products. Test probe threads into compression lug. Read all instructions and gather required tools. Maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Remove Existing Livefront Terminator

Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable End

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Check if the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the cut end; if greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug onto the conductor. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart (start at the crimp line mark, rotate 180 degrees for each successive crimp). Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly. Do not overtighten.

  7. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug (De-energized)

DANGER: Ensure the transformer and elbow are known to be DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with lubrication. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Use a full insulated "hotstick" type live-line tool for this operation. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing by attaching the hotstick tool to the pulling eye and following accessory instructions. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to engage the internal lock.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (274RLR only)

Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. WARNING: Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect measuring equipment can provide a false "no voltage" indication. Treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
