How to Install the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the 151SR/K151SR straight receptacle, and connecting it to a mating Elastimold product, ensuring a secure and properly grounded electrical connection.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire cutters, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp Chart, Solid dielectric type cable, Mating Elastimold product (e.g., 151SP/K151SP, 150T/K150T), Elastimold bail (required for deadbreak products), Silicone grease (for mating plug), #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied), Sealing material (for grounding wires), Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) (optional)

  1. Perform Preparation and Safety Check

De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation or removal of parts. Ensure all work is performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Verify that all package contents are complete and undamaged, and check component compatibility with the cable and mating products. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable Jacket

For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires remain for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, refer to its specific installation instructions regarding outer jacket cut back.

  3. Prepare Conductor Insulation and Shield

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches. Cut the insulation squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.

  4. Crimp the Conductor Contact

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring the conductor remains fully seated in the connector. Refer to the supplied crimp chart for proper crimping. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  5. Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation

Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, squared cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the outer jacket and insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it according to its instructions.

  6. Lubricate and Insert Cable into Receptacle

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Sparingly apply the supplied lubricant to the cable as shown in the diagram and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute with other lubricants, as they may harm the product. Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace the protective cover (note: this cover is for dirt protection only, not insulation; use an Elastimold insulating plug K150DP if insulation is required).

  7. Connect to a Mating Plug

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Insert the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms, approximately 1 3/4 inches, ensuring the rod is not cut during insertion. Insert the mating plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail, which is required for deadbreak products.

  8. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a customer-supplied length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist it tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
