How to Install the 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector
This guide details the installation of the 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector, converting a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable. It provides an operating interface for 15kV class loadbreak bushings or accessory devices.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick tool, Wire brush
Supplies needed:
168RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant, Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Grounding Connector
- De-energize and Remove Existing Termination
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before proceeding with installation or removal of parts. Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator, cut off the connector at the top, disconnect the ground lead from its base, and then remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to a length of 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Verify the insulation shield length; if it's less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring a square cut and avoiding nicks to the conductor.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are confirmed to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a hotstick tool; do not operate by hand.
- Perform Voltage Test (168RLR Only)
For 168RLR models, perform a voltage test to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can give false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
