How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug on High Voltage Cable
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug on solid dielectric type cables for 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, conductor crimping, and connection to a mating receptacle. Installation must be performed by competent personnel on de-energized apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Measuring tape
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug assembly (includes Conductor Contact, Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant), Approved solvent, #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied, if no grounding device), ELASTIMOLD bail, Silicone grease (for plug nose lubrication), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare Cable Jacket (Concentric Neutral or Copper Tape Shield)
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, allowing sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Socket Terminal
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart. Start crimps at the crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Plug Housing
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product.
- Install Cable into Plug Housing
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring it is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail. CAUTION: A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.
- Connect System Ground (if no ELASTIMOLD grounding device)
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Then connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
