How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Wrench, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), Silicone grease
- Prepare for Installation and De-energize Apparatus
Before starting, check the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance. Read all instructions. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators which can be installed and operated energized. Do not touch or move energized products. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
- Remove Livefront Terminator
Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed. If greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease, ensuring none enters the gap between the lug and insulation. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface.
- Perform Voltage Test (168RLR Only)
For 168RLR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points. Contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
