How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Hotstick tool
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied with kit, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Grounding connector (for neutral wires), Vinyl tape (if using jacketed cable with drain wires), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Cold shrink tube (if using 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, or 200ECS-G2 sealing kits)
- Safety First: De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: Confirm that all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect the contents of the package to ensure all parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Verify the probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered before full assembly, check for damage and replace the component.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of future operation. Based on your specific cable type (e.g., concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, copper tape shield), refer to the document's Step 1 for detailed instructions on managing neutral/grounding wires and removing the outer jacket/shield. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8” (175mm) back from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end 1/8” (5mm) maximum.
- Install the Compression Lug
Thoroughly wire brush the bare aluminum conductors to ensure a clean connection. Immediately install the compression lug onto the prepared conductor. Rotate the lug to spread any inhibitor. Position the compression lug so that the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the compression lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Thoroughly clean the cable insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Maintain cleanliness of the insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion until it is fully seated. Wipe off all excess lubricant from the exterior of the assembly. Align the elbow connector with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly around the grounding eye, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to the ground wire using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack is provided in the grounding and neutral wires to allow for future elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the specific instructions supplied with that kit to complete the grounding process.
- Prepare for Connection to Bushing
DANGER: Re-confirm that the transformer and the mating bushing are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied in the kit. DO NOT OPERATE (connect) by hand. Use a full insulated "hotstick" type tool for connection, following the operating instructions for loadmake operation when ready to energize.
