How to Install 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug attachment, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick tool, Cable strippers/knife, Vinyl tape
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), UD cable, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Grounding connector, Cold shrink tube (optional), Conductive copper tape (optional)
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect the contents of the package to confirm all parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) are present, undamaged, and compatible with your cable and mating products. Read the entire installation instructions.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed/jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the documentation for removing the outer jacket and shield to the specified lengths (e.g., 9-5/8 inches for jacket, 7-1/8 inches for copper tape shield). Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut without nicking the conductor. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm).
- Install the Compression Lug
Thoroughly wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately after preparing the cable. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Finally, thoroughly clean the cable insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
