How to Install Elastimold 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of Elastimold 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), 3 Sealing Strips (mastic), Vinyl tape, Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for grounding), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Observe Safety Precautions

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Install and operate all apparatus in accordance with individual user, local, and national work rules. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Loadbreak connectors must be operated with a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool. Inspect parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. If supplied with protective shipping cover(s), remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  2. Perform Pre-Installation Checks

Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered before full assembly, check for damage and replace the component. Read the entire installation instructions before starting. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  3. Train the Cable

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. To facilitate connection of the neutral to the tank ground and hotstick operation, pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the centerline of the bushing. Place a tape mark at the centerline of the bushing. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark. Alternatively, connect the neutral wires to the tank ground with a jumper or braid. Unwrap the neutral wire back past the bushing centerline. Cut excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.

  4. Prepare the Cable End

Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap the second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the neutral wires imbedded into the first mastic strip. Use a third strip of mastic, if needed, to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the provided diagram. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  7. Prepare for Bushing Connection

WARNING: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Do not operate the connection by hand; use a hotstick as per operating instructions.
