How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Measuring tape, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Grounding connector, Vinyl tape, Conductive copper tape

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Inspections

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Manage the neutral or drain wires according to your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield). This may involve pulling extra cable 24-26 inches (610-660mm) beyond the bushing centerline, binding neutrals 7-3/4 to 8 inches (195-203mm) back, removing 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket, or removing 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of copper tape shield. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If required, wrap conductive copper tape over the end of the copper shield or vinyl tape over drain wire ends.

  3. Prepare the Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the lug. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Connect the elbow to the bushing using a full insulated hotstick type tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
