Overview

The ABB 262LR-C5240 is a 25kV, 200 Amp loadbreak elbow connector engineered for underground distribution systems. The bi-metal compression lug ensures reliable electrical contact and mechanical strength, meeting ANSI C119.4 standards for loadbreak separable connectors. This elbow connector features an integrated test point, enabling safe voltage verification without disconnecting the cable. It is rated for 200 Amps continuous current and 10kA symmetrical fault current, making it suitable for primary underground residential distribution (URD) systems, pad-mounted transformers, and switchgear applications. The connector’s molded EPDM rubber housing provides environmental sealing and dielectric integrity up to 25kV phase-to-ground. Installation requires standard compression tools and follows ABB’s proven crimp sequence for consistent performance. The connector’s compact design fits within tight enclosures while maintaining a 200A load rating. For applications requiring frequent loadbreak operations, this connector reduces downtime by enabling safe, hot-stick-operated disconnections. The 262LR-C5240 is part of ABB’s 262LR series, designed for durability and reliability in demanding electrical environments.

How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Cable, Vinyl tape (optional), Copper tape (optional), Cold shrink tube (optional), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Insulated cap, Silicone lubricant

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Inspect Components

Before beginning installation, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high-voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; replace any damaged components if resistance is encountered.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Connection

Train the cable for adequate slack. Prepare concentric neutral or grounding braid wires per cable type for tank ground connection. Cut cable squarely at bushing centerline. Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from cable end, avoiding conductor nicks. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align lug's threaded hole with bushing bore and crimp per lug instructions. Remove insulation shield as shown in template, and bevel insulation end by max 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean insulation to remove all dirt or excess inhibitor.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  5. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing using the hotstick. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.

  6. Perform Voltage Test (262LR Only)

For 262LR connectors equipped with a test point, use a hotstick to remove the test point cap by peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide false readings. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
