How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool (as per lug chart), Probe wrench, Hotstick (for operation), Vinyl tape
Supplies needed:
262LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), UD Cable (appropriate type), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (for grounding), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Procedures
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety. Inspect all package contents and components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug to ensure free movement. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Connection
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire (24-26 inches beyond bushing centerline) for connection to the tank ground, or connect neutral wires to tank ground using a jumper or braid. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield to the specified length (e.g., 9-5/8 inches for jacketed cables, 7-1/8 inches of copper tape shield). Unwrap neutral or ground wires and bind them back, or wrap conductive copper tape over the end of the copper shield to hold it in place. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and carefully to avoid nicking the conductor. Wire brush any bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the lug end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Complete Grounding Connections
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Prepare for Final Connection to Bushing
DANGER: Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. The elbow is now ready to be connected to the bushing using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool, following the operating instructions for energized or de-energized connection as appropriate for your system.
