How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Cable cutters, Hotstick, Voltage sensing device (for capacitive test points), Vinyl tape

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Insulated cap (for bushing), Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all components for damage, verify ratings, and confirm compatibility with mating parts. Check the package contents for completeness. Test the probe by threading it into the compression lug to ensure free movement for approximately four turns without resistance. Read all instructions thoroughly.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Connection

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Prepare the concentric neutral wires or grounding braid for connection to the tank ground, ensuring extra length as specified for your cable type. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket (e.g., 9-5/8" or 240mm) and the insulation shield (e.g., 6-7/8" or 175mm) from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Remove an additional 2-1/8" (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8" (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.

  3. Install Compression Lug and Assemble Elbow Housing

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor, and ensure the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE). Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for about four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing and Perform Voltage Test (262LR Only)

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before making the final connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a hotstick, remove the insulated cap from the bushing. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to fully engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. For 262LR models with a test point: If performing a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points (not conventional voltage measuring equipment) to determine if the circuit is energized. WARNING: Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
