How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector. It covers cable preparation, lug crimping, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures for high voltage applications.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Wire strippers, Utility knife or cable cutting tool, Multimeter or suitable sensing device

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Copper ground wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Neutral wire connector

  1. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. Train the cable to provide sufficient slack for future operation. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), remove the outer jacket and/or shield to the specified dimensions (e.g., 9-5/8 inches for jacketed cables). Manage neutral or ground wires by unwrapping, binding, and folding them back as instructed for your specific cable type. If applicable, slide any cold shrink tubes onto the cable at this stage.

  2. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Thoroughly wire brush any bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the lug end and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Finally, thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the lubricant supplied with the kit; do not substitute. Maintain cleanliness, keeping the insulation free of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect Grounding Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow was preordered with a ground wire, proceed to the next step. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions for completion.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. Securely fasten a full insulated "hotstick" type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. Do not operate by hand.
