How to Install the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, grounding, and initial connection to a bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Cable cut back template, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper ground wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate neutral wire connector
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Cable Training
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating components. Check package contents for completeness. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Prepare neutral or grounding wires by pulling extra cable (24-26 inches or 610-660mm) beyond the bushing centerline and binding neutrals 7-3/4 to 8 inches (195-203mm) back, or connect neutral wires to tank ground using a jumper/braid. Unwrap neutral wires to the binding point. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Remove the insulation shield and cable insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush any bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack is provided in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
DANGER: Before proceeding, CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND THE ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated hotstick type tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
