How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, designed for terminating UD cables to 25kV class loadbreak bushings. It includes cable preparation, connector assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick, Vinyl tape
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate neutral wire connector, Cold shrink tube (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify proper fit of all components with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Depending on your specific cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the appropriate instructions for pulling extra cable for neutral wires (24-26 inches beyond bushing centerline) or removing the outer jacket (9-5/8 inches) and copper tape shield (7-1/8 inches). Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a cold shrink kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt and inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant ONLY; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Hand-thread the probe into the lug, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Establish Grounding Connections
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
DANGER: Re-confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
