How to Install Elastimold 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 261LRJS (without test point) and 262LRJS (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to lug chart), Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Mastic sealing strips (supplied), Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage. Read all instructions before starting. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness. If installing a 262LRJS, lubricate the test point cap and test point, then install the cap if not already present.

  2. Train and Cut Cable

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable, approximately 24-26 inches, beyond the centerline of the bushing. Place a tape mark at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable End

Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool, following appropriate operating instructions. Do NOT operate by hand.
