How to Install the 252LRJS Deadbreak Elbow Connector with Jacket Seal

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 252LRJS Deadbreak Elbow Connector. It covers cable preparation, component assembly, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing, ensuring a secure and reliable high-voltage termination.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Vinyl tape applicator, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail, Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG Copper Wire, Appropriate ground connector

  1. Perform Safety Checks and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Verify probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.

  2. Train and Prepare Cable Length

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline) to facilitate hotstick operation and connection of the neutral to the tank ground. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.

  3. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor, ensuring the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Install Hold-Down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket on the elbow assembly. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral to Ground

Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. Lubricate these surfaces ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. DANGER: Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.

  8. Secure Elbow with Hold-Down Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need to be readjusted when removing and replacing the elbow.
