How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cables to 35kV class bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm Copper Wire, Grounding Connector
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents and components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with cable and mating products. Read all instructions thoroughly before starting.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, beveling the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing only if both the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. If present, remove the insulated cap from the bushing using the hotstick. Withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion, being careful not to place it near a ground plane. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock.
- Perform Voltage Test (376LR Only)
For 376LR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
