Does the connector have a test point?
Yes, the 252LR Elbow Connector is equipped with an integral, non-corrosive, capacitive voltage test point.
When is a cable adapter needed for installation?
A cable adapter (160CA-XX) is needed for cables that have an outer diameter less than 0.565 inches.
What type of conductors are compatible with the lugs?
Copper compression lugs are for copper conductors only. Bi-metal compression lugs are suitable for both copper and aluminum conductors.
What standards does the connector meet?
The 252LR Elbow Connector meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386, Latest Revision.
What is the purpose of the 160CA cable adapter?
The 160CA Elbow Cable Size Adapter is designed for small cables with insulation OD between 0.495 in to 0.685 in.
What are the operating voltage limits for 25kV?
For the 25kV class, the maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage is 15.2kV, and phase-to-phase is 26.3kV.
What are the operating voltage limits for 15kV?
For the 15kV class, the maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage is 8.3kV, and phase-to-phase is 14.4kV.

How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 252LR deadbreak elbow connectors on UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding, and connecting them to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hot stick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper wire, Appropriate connector (for ground), Test point cap (if not installed)
- De-energize and Inspect Apparatus
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before installation or removal. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Verify probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Read all instructions and have required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train Cable
Train the cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable for Termination
Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation squarely, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with it, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (3.2mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Assemble Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail in the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate with the lubricant supplied. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow on the bushing. DANGER: DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.
- Secure Elbow with Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not have to be readjusted when removing and replacing the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test
Remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or use of the wrong equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
