How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Cable cut back template, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hot stick, Suitable sensing device
Supplies needed:
252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail, UD cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector
- Verify Components and Ensure Safety
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Do not touch or move energized products. Check the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match the cable. Check threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions and have required tools ready, maintaining cleanliness.
- Train and Prepare Cable End
Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the bushing's center line. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation squarely, avoiding conductor nicks. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug per the chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the semi-con shield and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (3.2mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean insulation to remove conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow and Probe
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread, and tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Install the Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires to Ground
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing; do not operate by hand or separate if energized.
- Secure the Elbow with Hold-down Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need readjustment for future removal and replacement.
- Perform Optional Voltage Test
If equipped, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
