How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector. It covers cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to a 25kV class 200 ampere deadbreak bushing or accessory device.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hot stick (fully insulated), Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test)

Supplies needed:

252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (silicone grease, supplied), Hold-down Bail, UD cable (with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all components of the 252LR package for completeness, damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Verify probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered.

  2. Prepare and Train the UD Cable

Train the UD cable for ease of operation, ensuring 20 inches (508.0mm) minimum beyond the pad mount transformer. Cut excess cable squarely at the bushing's center line. Unwrap and bind neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back. Remove shield and insulation squarely, avoiding nicks. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug per its chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for each crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the semi-con shield and bevel insulation end 1/8 inch (3.2mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean insulation to remove all conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant. Do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Install Hold-down Bail and Connect Neutral Wires

Place the hold-down bail into its bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets. Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.

  5. Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing

DANGER: Confirm the transformer and mating bushing are de-energized before proceeding. Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate both with the supplied lubricant. Use a fully insulated hot stick to carefully place the elbow onto the bushing. NEVER operate by hand or attempt to separate if energized.

  6. Secure the Elbow with the Hold-down Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown of the elbow so the eyebolt is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt clockwise to secure the elbow locator. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to allow the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow. Once set, the nut will not require readjustment for future removal or replacement.
