How to Install 755LR/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 755LR and 775LR deadbreak elbow connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible high voltage cable connections on 35kV class systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable preparation tools, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
755LR or 775LR Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (if applicable), Lubricant, Stud Prepack (threaded stud), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent for grounding), Suitable grounding connector, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), Mating part/Apparatus Bushing, Silicone lubricant
- De-energize and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before starting installation. Verify the package contents are complete and undamaged, and all components fit properly with the cable and mating products.
- Position and Cut Cable
Position the cable so it is located in its final assembled position with enough slack to provide adequate clearance for removing the elbows. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Jacket
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) from the cut end.
- Prepare Cable for Termination
Remove the outer jacket (where applicable) and prepare the cable insulation, semi-con shield, and tape marker according to the specific cable type and dimensions provided in the full installation instructions.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Expose Conductor
Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8 inches (111mm) and 4-3/4 inches (121mm). Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before insertion. Fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (must be less than 7 inches/178mm). Crimp the lug following its specific instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface. Verify the post-crimp distance from the lug end to the cable adapter is 6-7/8 to 7-5/8 inches (175-194mm).
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products for Connection
DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite End of Elbow
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, hand tighten, and then torque it according to the instructions provided with that specific mating part.
- Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded as per grounding device instructions or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.
- Perform Voltage Test
Remove the test point cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the circuit is energized. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point. Treat the elbow as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means.
