How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation, assembly, and grounding of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire strippers/Cable knife, Wire brush, Cable cutting tool
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate neutral wire connector, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe and compression lug threads by hand-threading the probe into the lug; it should turn freely. Read all instructions before proceeding.
- Train and Prepare Cable End
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the documentation for removing the outer jacket, unwrapping neutral/drain wires, or removing copper tape shield. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Remove Cable Shield and Insulation
Remove the cable shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end. Cut squarely, taking extreme care not to nick the conductor. Ensure the cut is straight, smooth, and squared.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Remove Insulation Shield and Bevel Insulation
Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the end of the cable. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Do not cut or nick the insulation during this process.
- Clean Cable Insulation
Thoroughly clean the cable insulation to remove all traces of dirt, grime, or excess inhibitor. The insulation must be pristine before proceeding to the next step.
- Lubricate Elbow Housing and Cable Insulation
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE with other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product or its mating parts. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime during this process.
- Slide Elbow Connector onto Cable
Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Ensure it slides on smoothly. After the elbow is fully seated, wipe off all excess lubricant from the exterior.
- Align Elbow and Thread Probe into Lug
Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Ground Wire to Elbow
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the grounding eye. If the elbow was preordered with a ground wire, proceed to the next step.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack is provided in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LR only)
For 162LR connectors, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points, following its manufacturer's directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until confirmed otherwise. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap, then replace it.
