How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cable. It covers cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm Copper Wire, Grounding connector
- Safety First: De-energize Apparatus
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any part(s). Failure to do so will result in serious or fatal injury. Do not touch or move energized products.
- Remove Existing Livefront Termination
Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches (26.7 cm) from the bushing centerline. Carefully remove 1-3/8 inches (3.5 cm) of cable insulation from the end, ensuring a square cut and avoiding nicks to the conductor. If the insulation shield measures greater than 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm), consult an ELASTIMOLD representative.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately after preparation. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram, tightening it snugly but without overtightening.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug (Initial Connection)
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are confirmed to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Align the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until a slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
