How to Install 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LRJS (without test point) and 162LRJS (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test, if 162LRJS)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic sealing strips, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Safety Checks and Component Verification

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Inspect all package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. For 162LRJS, if the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline) to facilitate connection to the tank ground and hotstick operation. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the bushing centerline. Unwrap the neutral wire back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector and Neutral Connection

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  4. Connect the Elbow to the Mating Bushing

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Withdraw the elbow from the accessory device on the apparatus parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion, being careful not to place the elbow connector near a ground plane. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
