How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 161LRJS (without test point) and 162LRJS (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable. It covers cable training, preparation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Sealing strips, Mastic, Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate grounding connector
- De-energize Apparatus and Perform Initial Checks
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions thoroughly and gather all required tools, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Provide an extra 24-26 inches of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid beyond the bushing centerline. Unwrap the neutral wire past the bushing centerline and cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Wrap one strip of mastic around the jacket, bend neutral wires back over it, and press them into the mastic. Wrap a second (and third if needed) mastic strip, overlapping the neutral wires, and cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately, then install the compression lug, ensuring the threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp, and wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template and bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Final Connection to Bushing (De-energized)
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. This lubrication must only be performed if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate by hand; use a fully insulated hotstick type tool for connection as per operating instructions.
