How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and preparation of 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable, including cable training, preparation, assembly, and connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Ensure the product is installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Read the entire installation instructions before starting. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. If the 162LRJS (with test point) is being installed and the test point cap is not present, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts.
- Train the Cable
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire to facilitate the connection of the neutral to the tank ground and the operation of the hotstick. Mark the centerline of the bushing with tape and pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the centerline. Connect the neutral wires to the tank ground with a jumper or grounding braid. Unwrap the neutral wire back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing the wires into the mastic. Wrap the second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the neutral wires embedded into the first mastic strip. Use a third strip of mastic if needed to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut back template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the copper wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
DANGER: Ensure the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized before lubricating and connecting. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. WARNING: Do not operate by hand; loadbreak connectors must be operated with a fully insulated hotstick type live-line tool.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LRJS only)
If using the 162LRJS with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter that is used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. WARNING: Contamination, moisture, dirt, or use of the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication on an energized elbow. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection has been made, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant supplied and replace it on the test point.
