Overview

The ABB 162LRJS-B5250 Loadbreak Jacket Seal Elbow Connector is a 15kV, 200 Amp rated bi-metal compression lug designed for reliable medium-voltage cable connections in underground distribution systems. This elbow connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.635 inch to 0.905 inch and is compatible with 2/0 stranded copper or aluminum conductors, making it suitable for primary distribution networks in utilities, industrial facilities, and commercial installations. The 162LRJS series features a loadbreak design, allowing safe disconnection under load conditions without interrupting service. The integrated test point enables live-line testing and fault detection without de-energizing the system, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency. The bi-metal compression lug ensures long-term conductivity and corrosion resistance, combining copper and aluminum materials to match the thermal expansion properties of both the connector and the cable. This jacket seal elbow connector provides a weatherproof, moisture-resistant seal to protect against environmental contaminants, extending the lifespan of the connection. The compression lug design ensures a secure, gas-tight joint that maintains low contact resistance over time, minimizing energy loss and heat generation. The compact elbow form factor simplifies installation in tight spaces, such as pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and underground vaults. Ideal for applications requiring 15kV class insulation, this connector is commonly used in: - Underground residential and commercial distribution networks - Industrial power distribution systems - Utility substation connections - Renewable energy integration (solar/wind farms) The ABB 162LRJS-B5250 is manufactured to meet industry standards for medium-voltage connectors, ensuring compliance with safety and performance requirements. How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

A comprehensive guide for installing Elastimold 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a mating bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic strips (3), Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Grounding connector

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks

De-energize all apparatus before starting. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify package contents and ensure all components fit properly with the cable. Check probe threads by hand for free movement. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work area throughout the procedure. For 162LRJS models, lubricate and install the test point cap if it is not already present.

  2. Train and Prepare Cable Length

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid, pulling it 24 to 26 inches beyond the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the centerline. Unwrap the neutral wire back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.

  3. Apply Mastic and Tape

Wrap the first mastic strip around the cable jacket, stretching it slightly. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them firmly into the first mastic strip. Wrap the second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the neutral wires imbedded into the first mastic strip. Use the third strip of mastic, if needed, to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.

  4. Prepare Insulation and Install Compression Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with it, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Finish Insulation Preparation

Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut back template. Bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  6. Assemble Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  7. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tightly and taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  8. Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a fully insulated hotstick type live-line tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
