How to Install Elastimold 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation and assembly of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp Tool, Wire Brush, Cable Cutting Tool, Wire Strippers, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing (261LR or 262LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), UD Cable (appropriate type), Copper Ground Wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate Connector (for neutral wires), Cold Shrink Tube (if using sealing kits), Conductive Copper Tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), HV Insulated Cap(s) or Connector(s)
- Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the package contents to ensure they are complete. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train Cable and Prepare Outer Jacket
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove the outer jacket and prepare neutral or drain wires according to your specific cable type (Non-Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Cable with Drain Wires, or Jacketed Copper Tape Shield Cable). Refer to the detailed instructions in the document for specific measurements and procedures for your cable type.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end 1/8” (5mm) maximum, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding Wire and Concentric Neutrals
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow is preordered with ground wire, proceed to the next step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the installation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Lubricate only if known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Consult your company’s safe work practices for the required tool length.
