How to Install 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Vinyl tape

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit)

  1. Ensure Safety and Prepare Cable Outer Jacket/Shield

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Failure to follow instructions will result in serious injury. First, confirm all package contents are complete and undamaged, and check components for proper fit. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack. Then, prepare the cable's outer jacket and shield according to your specific cable type (e.g., remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of outer jacket for jacketed concentric neutral cable, or 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of copper tape shield for copper tape shield cable). Manage neutral or drain wires as specified for your cable type, binding or folding them back as required. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable at this stage.

  2. Prepare Cable Conductor and Insulation

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Next, remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the lug end and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Finally, thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect Grounding Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete this step.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing and immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
