What adapter is used for Unishield cables?
For Unishield cables, the 10TL-W shield adapter is used, with the "W" code determined by the cable's insulation diameter.
Is a sealing and grounding kit necessary for installation?
For safety purposes, a sealing and grounding kit with the deadbreak elbow is highly recommended.
Which elbow housing is compatible with the 160CA adapter?
The 160CA adapter can only be used in a 165/166LR elbow size housing.
What is the purpose of the 160CA Elbow Cable Size Adapter?
The 160CA adapter is designed for small cables with insulation outer diameters between 0.495 inches to 0.685 inches.
Is the elbow connector submersible?
Yes, the elbow connector features a fully shielded, fully submersible molded rubber housing.
What standards does the connector meet?
The connector meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386, Latest Revision.
When is a cable adapter required for installation?
A cable adapter (160CA-XX) is required for cables that have an outer diameter less than 0.565 inches.
What type of conductors are compatible with the lugs?
Copper compression lugs are for copper conductors only. Bi-metal compression lugs are suitable for both copper or aluminum conductors.
What is the voltage rating of the elbow connector?
The 252LR Elbow Connector is a fully-rated 15/25kV, 200Amp Class dead-break connector.

How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Fully insulated hot stick, Cable cut back template
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied with kit), UD cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease (for test point cap), Elastimold cable shield or grounding device (if using other UD cable types)
- De-energize Apparatus
Ensure all apparatus in the work area is de-energized during installation or removal of any parts. Failure to do so will result in serious or fatal injury.
- Inspect Components
Check the package contents for completeness and inspect the elbow housing cable entrance size, compression lug size, and probe threads for proper fit and any damage. Replace damaged components if found.
- Prepare Test Point Cap
If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point with the supplied lubricant and install the cap.
- Remove Shipping Covers
If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Train Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) of cable extends beyond the end of the pad mount transformer.
- Cut Excess Cable
Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Bind Neutral Wires
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable.
- Prepare Cable End
Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Remove Semi-con Shield and Bevel Insulation
Remove the semi-con shield as indicated by the cable cut back template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm).
- Clean Insulation
Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Lubricate Cable and Elbow Housing
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime.
- Slide Elbow onto Cable
Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant.
- Align and Thread Probe
Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Assemble Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket.
- Connect Grounding Wire to Elbow
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye.
- Connect Neutral Wires to Ground
Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Clean and Lubricate Mating Parts
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. Lubricate them with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND or attempt to separate if energized.
- Secure Elbow with Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye.
- Tighten Eyebolt
Tighten the eyebolt by turning it clockwise to seat securely in the locator. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to act as a stop, preventing excessive force on the elbow. Once adjusted, the nut will not need readjustment for future removal and replacement.
