How to Install 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector on various UD cables, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), UD Cable, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. Confirm the work area is clear and inspect all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant) for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating parts. Replace any damaged components. Read all instructions thoroughly.
- Prepare Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack (24-36 inches / 610-914mm) beyond the bushing centerline. Mark the bushing centerline with tape. Remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires past the bushing centerline and cut excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a 200ECS sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Strip and Clean Cable for Lug Installation
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield (6-7/8 inches / 175mm from the lug end) and bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion and wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding Wire and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
- Verify De-energized State with Test Point (162LR Only)
For 162LR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
