How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick, Cable cut back template, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test)
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating components. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Check that all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Test the probe threads by threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions thoroughly, gather required tools, and maintain cleanliness. If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate it and install it onto the test point.
- Train Cable and Prepare for Neutral Connection
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation, pulling extra cable 24 to 26 inches beyond the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the centerline. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire to facilitate connection to the tank ground and hotstick operation.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductors
Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the outer jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor.
- Install and Crimp Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart for recommended crimp tool information and start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Final Cable Insulation Preparation
Remove the insulation shield as indicated by the cable cut-back template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared finish.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing (De-energized Operation)
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant *only if* the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Connect the elbow to the bushing using a fully insulated 'hotstick' type tool, following the operating instructions. Do not operate by hand.
- Perform Voltage Test (for 162LRJS with Test Point)
If using a 162LRJS with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
